Rising Damp

Full Survey -Professional Damp Experts

Rising damp is a less type of damp that affects building walls. It occurs when moisture from the ground is drawn upward through the walls by capillary action, essentially being absorbed through tiny pores in the bricks, much like water moving through a straw. Along with the moisture, salts from the ground are also carried up into the wall structure.

What is Damp? What does it impact?

Damp and mould primarily impact the respiratory system, particularly affecting the lungs and airways, but they can also cause irritation to the eyes and skin.

Prolonged exposure to these conditions can lead to serious respiratory illnesses such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other respiratory infections. In extreme cases, the health effects can become life-threatening, particularly for vulnerable groups.

Vulnerable Groups

While anyone can experience health issues related to damp and mould, individuals with pre-existing conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), young children, and the elderly are at a heightened risk of severe health complications. Their immune systems and respiratory systems are often less resilient, making them more susceptible to the adverse effects of damp and mould exposure.

Environments

Damp environments in homes can release a range of harmful substances, including allergens, irritants, and mould spores. These can exacerbate respiratory conditions and lead to new health problems such as allergic reactions, sinusitis, and skin conditions like eczema.

Even if mould is not visibly present, high humidity levels and persistent dampness can foster the growth of micro-organisms such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses, as well as house dust mites, which further contribute to poor indoor air quality. Over time, unresolved damp and mould issues can lead to more severe health problems and significant structural damage to the property. Addressing these issues promptly and effectively is crucial to minimizing health risks and preventing long-term damage.

Recommendations

While commercial products are a very short term measure, they don't tackle the roots of the problem. From our services we would recommend the Full Survey. This would allow us to come in and inspect the interior, exterior, windows, gutters and roofing.
