Wet Rot & Dry Rot

Wet Rot

Cause: Wet rot occurs in wood that is consistently exposed to high moisture levels, typically due to leaks, poor drainage, or high humidity.

Appearance: It generally appears as a dark, spongy, or crumbly texture and may have a damp, musty odor.

Severity: Wet rot is usually less damaging than dry rot and can often be remedied by addressing the moisture source and replacing affected wood.

Dry Rot

Cause: Dry rot, caused by the fungus Serpula lacrymans, can spread in wood that is not excessively wet but has high moisture content. It can also thrive in relatively dry conditions once it has infested the wood.

Appearance: It is characterized by a dry, brittle texture, with wood often appearing cracked and flaking. It may produce a distinctive musty smell.

Severity: Dry rot is more severe and dangerous than wet rot, as it can spread through timber, affecting large areas and compromising structural integrity, even if the wood is not extremely wet.
